Under normal conditions, the resistor and discharge gap of the high resistance arrester do not operate; Only when the lightning overvoltage is exceeded, the discharge gap can be broken down, forming a short circuit channel, and the continuous power frequency arc will burn on the arc starter arm, releasing the overvoltage energy to protect the wire from burns. After the voltage is released, the resistor of the arrester recovers the high resistance and the gap discharge stops.
